Phototherapy (Light Therapy)

Photobiomodulation using the Phovia system — a topical gel activated by a blue light source to support the skin’s own regeneration mechanisms.

Light

Targeted light therapy for the skin

What it is

Two minutes of light, once or twice a week.

Phovia is a topical therapy performed by applying a special gel with chromophores to affected skin, followed by exposure to a blue light source with the Phovia LED lamp for two minutes. The chromophores are activated by the blue light and release fluorescent light energy at multiple wavelengths. These wavelengths reach different layers of the skin to support the skin’s own regeneration mechanisms, which helps promote faster skin healing.

Sessions are performed once or twice a week, with the duration of treatment assessed individually based on your pet’s condition and progress. This treatment does not require sedation and is usually well tolerated.

Phototherapy, also known as photobiomodulation therapy, may help shorten skin healing time when used alongside antimicrobial treatment. It can be performed for faster resolution of skin lesions in cases of skin infection that take a long time to resolve, such as deep pyoderma or canine interdigital furunculosis.

Good candidates

Which pets it suits

Chronic skin lesions

Pets with chronic skin lesions due to infection are potential candidates and may benefit from phototherapy alongside their existing treatment.

Deep skin infection

Deep pyoderma, or canine interdigital furunculosis affecting the paws — infections with a long estimated time for resolution.

Good to know

Common questions

No. The gel is applied topically and the light exposure lasts two minutes. Most pets tolerate the session without any sedation.

That is assessed individually based on your pet’s condition and how the lesions respond. We review progress as we go rather than committing to a fixed course upfront.
